Motorcycle head gasket replacement typically costs about $400 to $1,500, parts and labor combined. A simple air-cooled single or twin sits near the bottom, while liquid-cooled multi-cylinder sport and touring bikes, where much of the bike has to come apart to reach the head, often land between $900 and $1,500 or more. These are typical U.S. ranges as of 2026 and vary by bike, region and shop.
The gasket set itself is cheap. You are paying mostly for hours of labor, and sometimes for machining if the cylinder head has warped.
How much does motorcycle head gasket replacement cost?
| Engine type | Parts (gasket set, bolts, fluids) | Labor | Typical total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air-cooled single (dirt bike, small street bike) | $40 to $150 | $250 to $500 | $300 to $650 |
| Air-cooled V-twin cruiser (per cylinder) | $60 to $200 | $300 to $700 | $400 to $900 |
| Liquid-cooled twin | $80 to $250 | $400 to $900 | $500 to $1,150 |
| Liquid-cooled inline four (sport or naked) | $100 to $300 | $600 to $1,200 | $700 to $1,500 |
| Touring or adventure bike | $120 to $350 | $700 to $1,300 | $850 to $1,650+ |
Add $80 to $250 for head resurfacing at a machine shop if the head is not flat, and more if valve work is needed. Treat these figures as ballparks, not quotes. For other engine jobs, see our guide to typical motorcycle repair costs by job.
What a head gasket does
A head gasket seals the joint between the engine's cylinder block and cylinder head. It keeps combustion pressure inside the cylinder and keeps coolant and oil out of places they should not go. On a liquid-cooled engine it also seals the coolant passages that run between the two.
Removing and replacing a cylinder head is a time-consuming job. On many motorcycles the engine sits in a tight frame, so the fuel tank, airbox, throttle bodies or carburetors, radiator, exhaust and cam drive must come off before the head can lift. That is why labor is most of the bill.
Signs of a blown motorcycle head gasket
- White smoke from the exhaust. White smoke suggests coolant is entering the combustion chamber. Our guide to motorcycle smoking from the exhaust explains the colors.
- Milky oil. Coolant mixing with oil can leave a light, mayonnaise-like residue on the dipstick or filler cap. On its own this isn't proof, since short trips and condensation can leave a similar film under the filler cap.
- Overheating. A head gasket leak can cause poor running and overheating. See motorcycle overheating causes.
- Coolant loss with no visible leak. The level drops, but nothing drips. Check hoses, the water pump weep hole and the radiator first, since an external leak is a much cheaper fix, as our motorcycle radiator replacement cost guide shows.
- Loss of power or rough running. Leaking combustion gas lowers compression in that cylinder.
- Oil or exhaust residue at the head joint on air-cooled engines.
- Bubbles in the coolant reservoir with the engine running.
A shop can confirm with a compression test, a leak-down test or a chemical test for exhaust gas in the coolant.
What pushes the price up or down
Engine layout and access
Air-cooled singles and many V-twins are relatively quick. Inline fours under fairings with the cam drive at one end take much longer. Some V-twins need each cylinder done separately, and boxer twins put each head on the outside of the engine, which can help.
Cam timing work
Lifting the head usually means removing the camshafts or rocker gear and resetting cam timing when it goes back together. Many shops also recommend replacing the cam chain tensioner gasket or checking the tensioner while it is apart. If the tensioner itself is worn, see motorcycle cam chain tensioner cost.
Machining
If overheating has warped the head, it must be resurfaced to seal properly. Some shops also check the cylinder deck. Machine work adds cost and time.
Valve work while it is apart
With the head off, it is the cheapest time to address worn valve guides, leaking valves or a valve adjustment. That raises today's bill but can save a second teardown. Ask the shop to price any valve work as a separate line so you can decide.
Hidden damage
If the gasket failed from severe overheating or detonation, the shop may find a cracked head, damaged pistons or worn rings. At that point you are pricing a rebuild instead. Our motorcycle engine rebuild cost guide covers that range.
Shop type and region
Dealers usually charge more per hour than independents, and big-metro labor costs more than rural areas.
Can I replace a motorcycle head gasket myself?
It is advanced work. You need a service manual, a torque wrench, a way to lock and time the cams correctly, a straightedge and feeler gauges to check flatness, and new head bolts if the manual calls for them. Mistakes in cam timing or bolt torque can bend valves or cause the new gasket to fail. If you have not done engine top-end work before, this is a job for a shop.
Is a head gasket job worth it on your bike?
Because labor is high, a head gasket repair can approach the value of an older or high-mileage motorcycle. A few questions help you decide:
- What is the bike worth running? Compare the repair estimate with what similar bikes sell for.
- How healthy is the rest of the engine? Good compression on the other cylinders, no bottom-end noise and normal oil consumption are good signs.
- What caused the failure? A gasket that failed from age is a cleaner repair than one that failed after severe overheating, which may have done other damage.
- Will you keep the bike? If you plan to ride it for years, a well-done top-end job can be good value.
Our framework on whether it is worth repairing an old motorcycle walks through the numbers.
How to get a fair written estimate
- Ask how they confirmed the gasket. Compression, leak-down or a combustion gas test should back up the diagnosis.
- Ask what the estimate assumes. Gasket set only, or head resurfacing and valve work too.
- Ask for an itemized estimate. The FTC advises that a written estimate should identify the condition to be repaired, the parts needed and the anticipated labor charge, and should say the shop will contact you for approval before exceeding a set amount of time or money.
- Ask what happens if they find more damage. Agree on a checkpoint once the head is off.
- Ask for the old gasket back. The FTC suggests asking for replaced parts, and a blown gasket is easy to see.

Ways to save without cutting corners
- Stop riding at the first sign of overheating to avoid a warped head
- Bundle valve adjustment or other top-end work while the head is off
- Ask for an OEM or reputable gasket kit and new bolts where required
- Get a second quote on bikes where the total approaches the bike's value
- Keep coolant fresh and the radiator clean to reduce overheating risk
When to see a mechanic
Stop riding and see a professional if:
- The temperature gauge climbs into the red or the warning light comes on
- You see steady white smoke with a sweet smell from the exhaust
- The oil looks milky or the coolant looks oily
- Coolant keeps disappearing with no visible leak
- The engine loses power suddenly or misfires on one cylinder
Running an engine with a leaking head gasket can quickly cause much more expensive damage. Have it towed if it is overheating.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride with a blown head gasket?
It is not a good idea. A leaking head gasket can let coolant into the oil or combustion chamber and lead to overheating, which can turn a gasket job into a full engine rebuild. Park it and get it diagnosed.
Do head gasket sealer additives work?
They may slow a very small coolant leak on some engines, but they are not a reliable repair and can clog small cooling passages. Most shops recommend fixing the gasket properly.
How long does a motorcycle head gasket job take?
Often 3 to 10 hours of labor depending on the engine, plus time for machine-shop work if the head needs resurfacing. Plan on the bike being at the shop several days.
Is it worth fixing a head gasket on an old motorcycle?
It depends on the bike's value and the engine's overall health. If compression is good and nothing else is worn, a gasket job can be good value. If the engine is tired, compare it with a rebuild or replacement.
